So what are your thoughts on the new “Halloween” remake that is being release at the end of August and was directed by Rob Zombie? I have mixed feelings, I think because it is an old classic I am wanting to see it. However I prefer the classic horror movies (you know the ones they rarely make anymore) like dracula, Frankenstein or anything with vampires, more than slashers or shock movies.

For me “Halloween” is more slasher than horror, but since it was such a big movie I am wanting to see it. Zombies past movies like “Devi’s Rejects” kinda affected me, lets just say Rob has one hell of an imagination!

The first TV spot has started to hit the air waves.

So are you going to watch this movie in the theaters or wait for dvd?

… you better stay away from him, he will rip your lungs out Jim … but I would like to meet his tailor

it is a classic that is often played in heavy rotation around Halloween. What is your favorite Halloween song?

Witches & Halloween

Halloween has many iconic figures such as witches, cats, pumpkins and vampires. Tales of witches have been around for years and years. Witches were said to have used their magical broomsticks to attend parties hosted by the devil on Halloween night.

Superstition & Witch Craft

Years ago people were quite superstitious about things such as black cats and witches. One such tale involves placing your clothing on backwards and then walking backwards on All Hallows Eve which might lead to you seeing a witch at the stroke of midnight on Halloween. Years ago it was thought that witches had the power to cast evil spells on the unsuspecting that could cause great harm and misfortune. Legend also has it that witches worshiped the devil.

Also, one superstition said that one way to tell if someone were a witch was to throw them into the water. If they floated, then they were a witch. If they drowned, then they were not.

Witch Persecutions
History involving witchcraft has had a long, bloody history, probably from man’s earliest history to the late 1700’s. The amount of deaths estimated range from a few hundred thousand to several million. Most of the persecutions were in Europe but also spread to the New World.

The accused were often the old, unattractive and the disliked. Most, but not all, were women.

When someone in a village fell under bad circumstances, they would oftentimes find someone to blame. They sometimes believed that the person had cast a spell upon them and caused them grief. Another reason someone might have accused another person of witchcraft would be that they were trying to save themselves from being accused.

In some circumstances, the accusations were so widespread that the populations of entire villages were nearly wiped out. Sometimes, entire families were killed as well.

Once accused of witchcraft, victims were usually tried in court and/or tortured so that a confession could be obtained. They could also be banished, imprisoned, and executed for their “crimes.” Although many victims were executed by methods such as decapitation and fire, some died during torture. These practices varied according to the time period and region.

In the New World from 1647 to 1768, thirty-seven people were brought before the court for charges of witchcraft, 25 of which died during the infamous Salem Witch Trials in 1692. Nineteen were executed for the crime of witchcraft and one person was crushed to death for refusing to enter a plea of guilty.

Voodoo History & Superstition

Voodoo first originated in African hundreds of years ago, later it was brought to the islands by slaves. Today voodoo is still practiced by many inhabitants of Haiti. While Hollywood has painted a rather dark image of voodoo their are many aspects of this religion that are positive in nature and affect people in a moral, economic and deep way, voodoo is more “religion” than black magic in Haiti.

Voodoo “black magic” plays a lesser role and is practiced by few people today (although around Halloween you might change your mind). Voodoo magic, has been greatly sensationalized by Hollywood with images of crazy mens and womens who had power over others, played with little “voodoo dolls” and were generally obsessed with evil.

Check out the movie Serpent & The Rainbow

Voodoo-movieOne movie that is fun to watch but is not a true representation of voodoo is “Serpent and the Rainbow” which tells the story of a man who is put under in a deep trance by a voodoo magician.

Unable to move, speak or communicate but fully awake while the doctor pronounces him dead, he then spends the next several hours watching his own burial and funeral.

Of course hours after he is pulled out of his grave once he is able to move and is “fully awake”. This movie is full of spells, magic and mysterious people that run around and get worried when the moon is full.

Black Cat Superstition & Halloween

Thousands of years ago black cats were thought to be shape shifters, demons and workers of the devil. During the middle ages cats were regularly hunted, often times they were then killed and burned. Cat’s were accused of being magical beings – witches if you will, in the worst cases cat’s were even sometimes burned alive.

Back in the day people were very superstitious and often believed that if a cat were to jump over a dead body the corpse would then turn into a vampire (spooky stuff in-dead)

It was also common belief that witches could shape shift into a cat, a method these “witches” used to get closer to their victims. It is here that “witches and black cat’s” began to be thought of in the same breath.

Today their are many “black cat” superstitions such as a cat walking under a ladder. However most people take these thoughts as silly and black cats are loved just as any other cats ;-)
